Monarch of the Glen Exam

Monarch of the Glen Exam
In the clip of ‘Monarch of the Glen’ it’s about a sixteen year old girl called Amy. She has run away from school and from her family. Amy wants to be treated like an adult so she goes off to work. Paul asks Amy if she can drive, she replies saying she passed first time. Whilst driving away there’s a bang, she crashed the car into another car. Unfortunately that car was her head teachers, this was when Paul found out that Amy was only sixteen and forces her to pack her bags and return to school as she hasn’t sat any of her exams. Amy is upset and decides to run away again.
Mise-en-scene
Representation in age is used with the clothes that everyone is wearing in the rural setting of the land. Amy is wearing a bright yellow top and fashionable jeans, this presents the she is young whereas other people where in dull boring clothes ready for work, this showed that they were not a student, you could clearly see that these were traditional farming clothes as there were Barber jackets and wellington boots. The way that Amy was working on countryside represents she didn’t have any grades for work as you would normally see older people working on farms.
Furthermore representation is also shown when Amy is in the Land Rover; the fact that Amy is driving such a big car for her first car also suggests that Amy isn’t an adult. When we find out Amy’s actual age you can see that her attitude changes more and more, she becomes more insecure and is cuddled up to a boy. Her facial expressions portray that she is worried about what’s going to happen, it is at this stage that we see that Amy is not an adult but in fact represented as a teenage girl.
In the next scene where Paul and the head teacher are talking highlight that it’s a serious conversation as the room looks like an office where important conversations are held, this is also because of the brandy that it used as a prop on the side. Representation is also shown here because the head teacher is quite old and you would normally see an old person drink a glass of brandy before having an important conversation. When Paul comes out of the room to talk to Amy, you can see the old lady in the background all worried about what’s going to happen, this also shows representation as old people are always so kind and worry about everything.
Finally we see Amy in a room which highlights her age, as the room is decorated with pictures on the mirror of times where she has been happy. The use of the cards and pyjamas and the teddy bear show that she is just an innocent girl who just wants to be loved by someone as she earlier said that her father didn’t care. When placing the teddy bear down on the bed she does it carefully.
Camera
Age is represented in many camera movements throughout this clip. There’s a mid shot of Amy saying that she drive with a worried face, this illustrates that she may not know how to drive. Straight after a close up in the car of her guessing how to start the car, the camera movement used is panning as its moving from one side to the other. The head teacher is a good example of an old man who likes to drink brandy whilst trying to resolve a problem. The use of the camera being in a low angle concentrates more on the facial expressions of Amy and Paul arguing, it also helps the audience to feel sorry for Amy. Panning is used again in this clip where Amy is just about to leave, the camera zooms into the photos and starts panning to the side. The over  the shoulder shot remains focused on her as she admits that she has something to explain, but then Paul interrupts and we are left not knowing what she wanted to say.
When Amy is in the bedroom the camera is always following her, this is called panning. Whilst the camera is panning, it stops and focuses on her pictures. Later one the old lady comes in the room and the camera is outside and is looking inside of the bedroom. When Paul finds out that Amy has run away there is a close up of his face showing us his reaction.
Editing
At the beginning of the clip there is scene where the camera is interrupted as it moves quickly to the next scene, this is where Amy was about to explain to the boy that she was only sixteen but then Paul interrupts.
Sound
At the beginning of the clip everyone was working and it was a sunny day and the music was jolly, but then it began to get tense which highlighted that something was going to happen and in this case it was because we found out that Amy was only sixteen. When Amy crashes the car into the head teacher he immediately turns to her with an aggressive voice saying ‘Amy should have known it was you’ suggests that as she is still a teenager she still needs to be disciplined and shouted at so that she learns but as soon as he talks to Paul he talks to him with respect. When Amy says ‘I hate you’ highlights that she is still young and doesn’t mean what she says, this is all the diegetic sound used in this clip.
