Sound - Analysis of a clip from Eastenders
The clip begins with sound effects from Dawn banging on the headboard trying to escape. The use of this banging sets the scene and explains to the audience what is going on. In the background you can hear a quiet voice; this is May singing away as if nothing is happening. This highlights the two different worlds they are in. The non diegetic sound from the CD player emphasises May’s feelings, she’s relaxed and happy that she has Dawn and things are going well. As Dawn tries to get out the room she managed to hit Rob a few times, here you can see a few sound effects; the punch/kick she gives him and the vase smashing on his head. These effects make the clip feel more realistic, as this is what we would do if we were held hostage. The next scene is back to May, where she is completely oblivious to what has happened as she has the CD player playing calm music. The diegetic sound ‘I knew he’d mess things up’, highlights May’s true colours as at the beginning of this clip she seemed to be nice. May is now yelling at Dawn and saying that it’s her baby, this emphasises that she is going mad and obsessed with this idea. When Damn runs away, we can hear her footsteps which creates tension, as she might not be able to escape. Dawn manages to escape as May screams ‘I WANT MY BABY!’ this builds on even more tension as she is going insane. Dawn gets in the car and starts the engine of the car and May appears by the side window and yells her name, this creates a sense of frustration to the audience as it questions the audience whether Dawn will be able to escape. The non-diegetic sound of the car not getting into gear also emphasises this point. May then goes round to the other side of the car and carries on repeating ‘I WANT MY BABY!’ this piece of dialogue is repeated in the clip several times emphasising that she is serious and will not give up on the fact that she hasn’t got it.
